Galdor Entúlië

Galdor Entúlië

PostAuthor: Tuilinde » Fri Jun 18, 2010 10:00 pm

On the Theme for the Summer of Siblings, and provoked by the Story of Elros and Elrond written by Elizabeth Stephens, I am writing something about the contact kept up between Elrond and descendants of his brother - imagining that Galdor from the Havens was involved in this all along. My argument is that Círdan would send someone known and trusted for a very long time to Elrond.

As usual this is a first (unfinished) draft, and may be not only corrected, but perhaps altered significantly in the coming weeks. I have taken considerable liberties with word order, but hope that despite that the sense of the poem may still be grasped.

Here is the Quenya and a word-for-word translation, together with a useable English translation.
A Free English Version may be found in the English section.

Galdor Entúlië.

Galdor Has Come Again

Galdor entúlië Sindelondello
Colala mentarya Ciryatanello.
Ananta, utúlies lá ve senwa, ve nó -
únótimë lúi, únótimë loassen.
Colala quettar, Galdor entúlië.

Galdor again-has-come Grey-haven-from
bearing message-his Cirdan-from
and yet, come-has-he not as usual, as before
countless times, countless years-in.
Bearing words, Galdor again-has-come
.

Galdor has come again from the Grey Havens
bearing his message from Cirdan.
And yet he has not come as before,
countless times, in countless years.
Bearing words, Galdor has come again.

Knowing our hearts and minds, our fears and joys.
Bearing words for us, Galdor came again.

Our paths were parted by our choice.
When we turned to Elves or to Men,
His love still held to us, a thread crossing the ocean;
Words of brotherhood for us.
Bearing words for us, Galdor came again.

So his words came and returned-

In Middle-earth years pass swiftly,
swift are the brief lives of Men.
So soon came words of grief and pain.
So soon my Elros was lost from me.
A heavy-hearted friend, Galdor came again.

I looked through your Quenya version, but do not know what to do with my comments. If you alter it significantly, it may not be worth posting them now. Shall I wait till you have a final version?

Yes, give me a week, and I shall have brought it more in line with my new English version, and possibly managed to add the final stanzas.
