Nati yar mare nin (Triolet)

Nati yar mare nin (Triolet)

PostAuthor: órerámar » Sat Jan 09, 2010 10:15 pm

This little poem is part of my toying with fixed forms.

I lóme melinye
rá ilyan ya calima
imbe Menel Cemenye.
I lóme melinye
yá silme *cirihtanye
ar tintanye licuma,
an i lóme melinye
rá ilyan ya calima.

Very simple vocabulary, except *cirihtanye which is not attested in Quenya, but is formed from the Noldorin _critho_ (*k'rikta) unter the stem KIRIK- in the Etymologies (LR:365). One could probably argue here that given the meaning of the stem KIRIK- "sickle", reap would mean to harvest with a sickle, whereas the meaning in the poem is of course simply "to gather", extended meaning that "reap" has in English.

I like those fixed forms because they make even a modest text sound harmonious.

Things that I like
Slightly arranged version, so that it fits also the Triolet form in English.

The night, though it sounds trite, I love it
for all that is fair and bright
on Earth and way, way above it.
The night, though it sounds trite, I love it
when I reap the starlight of it
and the heat of a candle's light.
The night, let it sound trite, I love it
for all that is fair and bright.

It's a case which is a bit exotic, but *k'rikta actually might come out as *rihta- in Quenya if the vowel was suppressed very early, compare d'rāk > Q. ráka 'wolf' (DARÁK-).

You are right, this could have been one of the developments, but DARÁK- *d'rak may have become ráka only because D became either N or L (DER- nér, DAB- lav-) and the other option was the loss of the initial consonant and vowel. I cannot see a similar reason for KIRIK-.

Initial dr- is simply impossible in Quenya and simplifies to r-, see:
In Q. all these newer groups were again simplified (as dr > r) or made syllabic (as pr- > par´). (PE18:45)
Unfortunately, there is no statement about kr-, but it looks like it would become *kar´ if made syllabic, thus *karihta-.
