Turgon's Song of The Glory of Gondolin

Explanation:
This is a poem of my own composition, drawn from information in the Primary Sources. ie. The various volumes of The History of Middle Earth ; Unfinished Tales ; and The Silmarillion. It was written when Unquendor commissioned a new poem for an edition of Lembas Extra, and the English version was eventually published in December 2009. I am aware that there may be arrors in the Quenya, and shall receive corrections very gladly.
Although I have called it a song, it has no music, and is intended simply to be read aloud.
I have had to make some difficult choices about what to include, since the details of the story of Gondolin changed several times throughout the long years that Professor Tolkien worked on it. For instance - in one place we are told that some of the refugees from the city set off to go through the Way of Escape, but were met and destroyed by a dragon. Elsewhere we are informed that after the Nirnaeth Arnoediad the Way of Escape was totally destroyed. Because I wanted to be able to include the Seven Gates in my description of Gondolin, I have made an editorial decision that they still exist at the time when this poem was written.
I have tried to match the Seven Names of Gondolin to the Seven Gates and the various Houses, and to different aspects of the City and its life, but much has been left out - it is quite long enough!! Perhaps I'll try a prose version sometime in the future!
The poem is intended to be in Turgon's voice, written over a period of time, mostly at the height of Gondolin's glory; but completed just after the birth of Eärendil, and rounded off by an Afterword which makes mention of the Nirnaeth and the Fall of Nargothrond.
The full poem is available in a variety of forms - Quenya on its own; Quenya with an English translation and Notes on *Word constructions; Quenya with the English version; the English Version on its own can be found the English section of this forum. If you would like any of these, please contact me and I will be glad to email them to you. tuilinde@talktalk.net

Introduction:
Turgon's Song of The Glory of Gondolin came to light in the reign of King Elessar, when, concerned that important papers might be lost, or at the very least hard to locate when needed, he ordered a team of archivists to go through all the material stored in the King's Libraries in Minas Tirith and reorganise and re-catalogue it.
When he had added the Afterword Turgon must have slipped these pages inside some of Idril's personal papers which were carried away from Gondolin by the refugees. Later she found and kept them by her, leaving them with Eärendil when she departed, and so they were passed on down to Elros and Elrond on through the ages, copied when necessary, but held within the true line in Númenor and later in Gondor.
Elessar attempted to discover whether a copy had ever been held in Rivendell, but neither Arwen nor her brothers had ever seen one. If such a copy had existed, Elrond must have either destroyed it before he left, or taken it with him.
It seems clear to me that it was because of its personal tone, that it was never made public before this. I feel that now, in a time when many realise the true value of all that was attempted and lost in earlier Ages, it is not wrong to finally share this all too brief picture of the great city of Gondolin.

The characters, settings, places and languages in this poem are the property of the Tolkien Estate and I will not receive any money or other remuneration from the presentation of this work in Tolkien Societies' magazines or on websites. The work is the intellectual property of the author, and if copied, should be credited to her and to the Editor of "Lembas Extra".
