Answers to exercices on comparative : (in brackets the literal translation).
A mountain is higher than a hill. (A mountain is high beyond a hill.)
Gandalf is far and away wiser than Saruman. (Gandalf is exceedingly wise beyond Saruman.)
This jewel is much more precious than that jewel. (This jewel is very precious beyond that jewel.)
Arwen’s tressure is lovelier than other tressures. (Arwen’s tressure is lovely before other tressures).
The Sun is far and away brighter than the Moon. (The Sun is exceedingly bright beyond the Moon).
Wings of eagles are longer than the wings of nightingales. (Wings of eagles are long before the wings of nightingales.)
The fruits of the mountain ashes are much smaller than the fruits of other trees. (The fruits of the mountain ashes are very small beyond the fruits of other trees.)
Iron is harder than gold. (Iron is hard beyond gold.)
Doing wrong is uglier than a mistaken action. (Doing wrong is ugly before a mistaken action.)
A long year is far and away longer than a solar year. (A long year is exceedingly long beyond a solar year.)
